One Child Campaign

I clearly remember the day I learned that there are over 143 million orphans in the world.  With my happy family life, I couldn't quite wrap my mind around it.  It's a staggering number.  I looked at my own children and tried to imagine what it would be like if THEY were destitute and without a family.  The thought was heart-breaking.

I must admit that I have spent an overwhelming majority of my life ignoring the orphans.  I visited orphanages while participating in short-term mission trips in foreign countries, but I never did anything that changed their life or helped meet their physical needs.  Even though I live in a nation of extreme excess, I mostly kept my excess to myself.

Once I got a glimpse of the extraordinary need of orphans around the world, I felt overwhelmed.  Where do I start?  What can I do?  It was brought to my attention that a friend of mine had started an organization with a unique approach to helping the plight of orphaned children in Ethiopia, a country with over 5 million orphans.

One Child Campaign focuses on bringing awareness to this enormous need by organizing Orphan Awareness Trips, volunteer trips, and providing resources for adoptive families.  My friends Caleb and Becca David are people of integrity and compassion.  They have adopted one child from Ethiopia and are in the process of adopting two more.  If you are looking for a way to address this enormous need, visit the One Child Campaign website to see if there is something you can do to help orphans, beginning with just one child.
